"Harpenden's Award Winning Classic Car Meeting"

Event Information

Traffic Flows

  • Subject to later confirmation

Public Transport

  • Spectators are requested to avail of public transport links when travelling to the event

  • First Capital Connect run regular services which have been increasingly used by spectators in recent years

Driving Standards

  • The driving standards of a small minority came in for significant criticism in 2003 and contributed to the stakeholders increased involvement in 2004.  2004 and 2005 saw no significant concerns highlighted by the Police.

  • The organisers appreciate that this is not the behaviour of the true enthusiast.  To counter this element the organising clubs have appointed 'Driving Standards Observers' to monitor the departure of participants. These 'Judges of Fact' will ensure that any participant bringing the event into disrepute will not be allowed to attend in future years.

  • The Police will also be taking particular interest in driving standards and ultimately can levy far harsher sanctions.

  • We would appeal that this message gets passed to friends and fellow enthusiasts. The future of  'Classics on the Common' is threatened by any safety lapse or uncomplimentary Police report.

Spectator Parking

  • Traffic in the vicinity of Harpenden gets extremely busy on the evening of Classics on the Common.

  • The Common is within an easy walk of Harpenden Railway Station and visitors coming from the North or South would be well advised to consider parking at St. Albans or Luton Parkway Stations and arriving in Harpenden by train.

  • Subject to satisfactory ground conditions on the day, Harpenden Town Council has granted permission for spectators to park on the area of Common between Cravells Road and Walkers Road.

  • Spectators will need to cross Walkers Road to reach the main Common. Please cross with care. A one way system will be in operation onto the spectator parking area with entry via Cravells Road and the exit via Walkers Road.

  • A final decision on ground conditions will be made on the morning of the event. If the ground is suitable, spectator parking will be signposted. It will not be possible to update the website after the decision has been taken, so if there is no signage please park in the Town or Station Car Parks (normal parking fees apply)

Spectator Parking - DISABLED ACCESS

  • We would recommend disabled visitors use the disabled parking bays in the town centre from where there is level access to the Common.

  • If any disabled visitor requires advance information or assistance please email and we will endeavour to assist or advise.

Spectator Parking - GENERAL OBSERVATIONS

  • Please do not park on any of the common areas, especially on the triangle by Arden Grove and adjacent to The Harpenden Arms. This area is designated for CLASSICS ONLY and will be used once the main common area is full.

  • Unauthorised parking on pavements, hard-standing or adjacent grassed areas , pavements and  not marshalled by under the guidance adjacent to any of the common

  • We would appeal for locals to walk to the common event, particularly if it is a fine evening. It will undoubtedly be faster! If, however, this is not possible, please use the town car parks.

  • Please be mindful of residents who live in close proximity to the Common.   Please park with courtesy and, if at all possible, refrain from parking in residential streets.

Toilet Facilities

  • All local public houses have kindly agreed that spectators and entrants alike can have access to the their toilet facilities. In return, if you were to partake of refreshment in one these establishments, either on the night or in the near future, we are assured your custom would be most welcome.

Barbeques

  • Harpenden Town Council has asked that we reiterate that, under local byelaws, BBQs are NOT permitted on the Common.

  • This byelaw relates to all forms of fires and barbeques on the Common, full barbeques and disposable foil trays alike. Your cooperation in this matter is most appreciated.

Volunteer as a Marshal?

  • The organisers would be grateful for any offers of assistance in marshalling. The duty is far from onerous and we would be grateful for your help for perhaps just one hour of the evening?
